| Description: These 1.6 million acres of colorful desert punctuated by forested mountains, contains something to appeal to everyone. The bold can reach the backcountry by trail or by bumpy backroads. If it's too hot for a strenuous expedition, there are interesting historic sites to visit, & two visitor centers with excellent interpretive exhibits.
Location: Access from I-15 or I-40 east of Barstow & west of Needles.
Season: year round.
Fee: entrance, passes accepted.
