| Description: The area in & around Pilot Knob is rich in both human & natural history. At one time, Patton's troops trained here in preparation for desert fighting in World War II. A State of California Historic Marker lies on the site of Patton's camp. A portion of the Pilot Knob area has been designated an area of critical environmental concern. This is a popular camping spot. Since only minimum camping facilities are available, only self- contained camping units are allowed.
Location: South of Interstate eight near Sidewinder Road.
Season: September 15 - April 15.
Fee: long-term or short-term permit required.

Cultural-Historic Sites Restrooms. Notes: Both long-term & short-term permits are valid in any of the seven LTVAs in California & Arizona. The Fort Yuma Indian Reservation borders public lands near Pilot Knob. Please avoid tresspassing by observing all posted signs. |
