Campground: State of California, Dept Parks & Rec, Providence Mountains State Recreation Area

Description: On the east side of the Providence Mountain range, this park has dramatic views of the surrounding Mojave desert. The cactus & yucca of the lower elevations gives way to a pinyon pine forest at upper elevations. Mitchell, Pakiva, & Tecopa Caverns are all filled with intricate limestone formations, & can be seen by taking a cavern tour. Other facilities include a campground, a nature trail, & several longer hiking trails. Location: The recreation area is located in the eastern Mojave Desert, 56 miles from Needles on Interstate 40, 116 miles east of Barstow, & 16 miles northwest of I-40 near Essex Road. Season: year round; Spring through Fall is best. Available: Picnicking Hiking/Backpacking Camping Wildlife Viewing Caving Visitor Center RV Sites Exhibits Interpretive Programs Drinking Water Cultural-Historic Sites Restrooms. Notes: Max RV length 31 feet. Annual pass ($125) good for all California state parks.
