| Description: Here on the rim of the great central Valley, mountains rise thousands of feet above the sea, rivers slash deep canyons in the granite, & giant lodgepoles & sequoias grow on the slopes. Aboveground, the park rises from 1300 feet above sea level to 14,491 feet at the peak of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous US. Underground, miles of marble caverns shelter many endemic cave species.
The best way to see this park is to get out of your car. Short nature trails wind through sequoia groves, & longer trails lead up into the high country. Caving expeditions are available to the Crystal Cave. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail cuts through Kings Canyon.
736,980 acres of the park is designated wilderness. The Pacific Crest-John Muir Trail crosses through for about 65 miles. Numerous other trails attract hordes of hikers & backpackers.
