| Description: Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity NRA, with its mountainous back country & large reservoirs, offers many summer activities such as hiking & boating, as well as historical remains of the California Gold Rush of 1849. Shasta Lake is the largest man-made reservoir in California, & along with Trinity Lake & Whiskeytown Lake, offers excellent opportunities for H2O sports, including swimming, scuba diving, H2O skiing, boating & fishing. Whiskeytown Lake was created by diverting H2O from the Trinity River Basin to the Sacramento River Basin. The most prominent landmark within the Recreation Area is Shasta Bally (elevation 6,209 feet). The summit may be reached on foot & by 4-wheel drive vehicle, but is closed in the winter. Picnicking, hiking, hunting, interpretive programs & horseback riding are also popular. This is a good eagle & osprey watching area.
