Campground: Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Description: The spectacular landscape here was formed slowly by the action of H2O & rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, & startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Two campgrounds offer nearly 100 sites. Many overlooks on the canyon can be reached by car, but many trails penetrate the canyon. Kayaking & fishing in the river. Location: South Rim: 15 miles east of Montrose, via US 50 & CO 347 North Rim: 11 miles south of Crawford, via CO 92 & North Rim Road (closed in winter) Season: year round. Reservations: no.
