Campground: Fort Pickens National Park (Gulf Islands National Seashore)
Located west of Pensacola Beach, on Northwest Florida coastline, example of early 19th century coastal fortifications. (Damage from 2004 hurricanes, planned re-opening Summer 2005 - check status on webpage.) Campground (RV, tenting, cabins), museum, wilderness area, archeological area, historical site, "a botanist's paradise, a zoologist's heaven, a bird watcher's nirvana , a fisherman's Valhalla, & Shangri-la for sun worshipers." Lies entirely within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. As federal park land, it is administered by personnel from the U.S. Park Service & patrolled by park rangers.
