Greenville is located on the shore of Moosehead Lake, in Maine. Many of the Greenville campgrounds are not located in Greenville, but in the surrounding area, know as unorganized townships. Since the 1800’s, mail has been delivered to many of the northern residents living in unorganized townships through the post office in Greenville.
Lumbering was once the reason many people came to Greenville. Many affluent persons used to go to Greenville & the surrounding areas to fish & hunt in the early days. As a result, Greenville became an outdoor destination for those enjoying all outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, bird watching, canoeing & an all time favorite today, moose watching.
Many of the Greenville campgrounds offer many or all of the above activities.
Private lands that were once owned by timber & paper companies have been used for outdoor recreation by the public for over 100 years. Today much of this land is still open to the public for outdoor use. There are 1000’s of miles of logging roads that were built by paper companies & logging companies to move wood to the mills. These roads are still used today to truck lumber, & by people who are going out to experience the outdoor activities that this northern region of Maine has to offer.
Nearby attractions include Baxter State Park, the Appalachian Trail, Ripogenus Dam & 100’s of smaller lakes, ponds, rivers & streams.
Remember, even though listed as a Greenville campground, many such as Frost Pond Camps offer cabins as well as camping. You may wish to check each place that you would like to visit to see how close to Greenville it is actually located. Many facilities are located 15 to 60 or more miles from Greenville, but that will still be the mailing address.
