Campground: The Evergreens Campground |
| A Little History....
Native Americans....
lived on these premises for thousands of years.
Many of their artifacts & fireplaces have been found here, & the Maine State Museum has conducted archaeological digs on these grounds.
Ledge rocks on the opposite shore have Native American carvings
(also called petroglyphs)
said to be the best east of the Mississippi.
The image (shown right) was taken by the Maine State Museum after the rock etchings had been highlighted in chalk. Click on the image for a larger view.
1775
Benedict Arnold's men came up the Kennebec River on their way to Quebec & camped here at what is now the Evergreens Campground.
The Evergreens Campground is now listed as a Historic Site & artifacts are on display in the restaurant.
(All artifacts found, are the property of The Evergreens.) |
