Detroit Lakes is located 45 minutes east of Fargo, ND & 200 miles North West of Minneapolis, MN on Hwy 10. The town name, Detroit Lakes was derived from the french language refering to the sand bar between big & little Detroit Lake. The Detroit Lakes Water Carnival is a family fun filled six days in the middle of July. Detroit Lakes Campgrounds are all full during this busy time of the summer. There are parades, H2O fights, a chili cookoff, pageant, H2O ski, mountain biking & sailing competitions. The WE Fest country western concert is held the 1st weekend in August in Detroit Lakes just south of the River Hills Park RV resort on Hwy 59 South. The Pine To Palm Golf Tournement is also held just South of Detroit Lakes the second week in August. Detroit Lakes will celebrate 150 year anniversary of Minnesota by being the "Capital for a Day" on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008. Detroit Lakes & River Hills Park have 412 lakes within a 20 mile radius giving you the opportunity to enjoy a different lake everyday of the year! We have 14 golf courses within minutes of the Detroit Lakes area including River Hills Golf Course, a challenging par 29 nine hole course on rolling hills adjoining the RV Park at River Hills. 2007 saw the construction of a new clubhouse with a indoor swimming pool & gameroom. Just down the road we can enjoy the Shady Hollow Flee Market every Sunday. Or the 10,000 Lakes Festival held July 23rd to the 28th 2008 on the same 600 acre concert & wooded & lakeside camping grounds as the WE Fest country music festival. The winter months in the Detroit Lakes area offer people the chance to enjoy snowmobiling on the hundreds of miles of groomed trails, ice fishing on the many lakes crowned by the week long celebration of Polar Fest with highlights including: the Polar Plunge, vintage snowmobile rallys, ice hockey tourneys, fishing derby, snowmobile races, & a parade. As the Detroit Lakes slogan goes: "It's all here all year"!
