Campground: Canyon Ferry Lake

Description: Canyon Ferry Lake is a 76-acre reservoir formed by Canyon Ferry Dam on the Missouri River. 233 campsites in 12 campgrounds, seven boat docks, two boat access areas, three commercial marinas & ten picnic areas. The Big Belt Mountains rise to the east of the lake, creating a dramatic backdrop. The lake harbors a popular fishery, with rainbow trout being the most common catch for most of the year, & yellow perch in the winter. Hiking & biking the many trails & driving on the back roads are other popular activities. Many people enjoy wildlife watching here, in the wetlands of the Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area, & below the dam in the fall. This is where hundreds of eagles convene each year to feed on the kokanee salmon which have spawned & died. Other area wildlife includes mountain goats, elk, deer, black bears, beaver, muskrat, waterfowl, raptors, & songbirds. For more information, stop in the Canyon Ferry Visitor Center, at 7661 Canyon Ferry Road in Helena. Location: From Helena, go east 20 miles on US 12/287. Campgrounds are spread out on both sides of the lake. Season: year round. Reservations: no.
