Campground: Bannack State Park

Description: Elevation 5995 feet. In its glory days, the town of Bannack was the site of Montana`s first major gold discovery in 1862, the first boom shortly therafter, & the first territorial capital by 1864. Each year the park holds a festival to commemorate the wild & wooly early years, which features living history programs & exhibits. Bannack Days is held the third weekend in July. 28 campsites, a group campground, & a tipi are available for those who wish to stay a while. Paved interpretive trail is accessible. If history palls, there is a horseshoe court. Location: From Dillon, go three miles south on I-15,then 20 miles west on Secondary Route 278, then four miles south on county road. Season: year round. Reservations: required for groups & for tipi.
