| Description: Elevation 5995 feet. In its glory days, the town of Bannack was the site of Montana`s first major gold discovery in 1862, the first boom shortly therafter, & the first territorial capital by 1864. In Bannock, bust followed boom, & today, Bannock is abandoned. The main street of this ghost town is still lined with the log & frame structures built in Montana`s formative years. Grasshopper Creek, from which was harvested fortunes in gold, now yields only trout. Each year the park holds a festival to commemorate the wild & wooly early years, which features living history programs & exhibits. Bannack Days is held the third weekend in July. 28 campsites, a group campground, & a tipi are available for those who wish to stay a while. Paved interpretive trail is accessible. If history palls, there is a horseshoe court.
Location: From Dillon, go three miles south on I-15,then 20 miles west on Secondary Route 278, then four miles south on county road.
Season: year round.
