| Description: 32,318 acres. The journals of Lewis & Clark are filled with rhapsodic descriptions of the plants & animals along the Missouri River. Here, where the Great Plains gives way to the Rocky Mountains, every species of big game in Montana is resident or vistor, offering today`s treveler much the same sense of awe. Most of the year, you can flush out upland birds, songbirds, raptors, furbearers & small mammals. Access to the Gates of the Mountain Wilderness & the Missouri River. Developed campgrounds, fishing & boating on Holter Lake. Two not-quite-parallel roads traverse the length of the area, connected at several points by trails. The WMA is closed to all visitation from the end of the big game hunting season until May 15 each year.
Location: From I-15 north of Helena, exit at Wolf Creek go east to the bridge on Missouri River Road; turn south on Beartooth Road, on the east side of Holter Lake, & follow the signs.
