Campground: Going to the Sun Road

Description: The steep & breathtakingly scenic Going to the Sun Road has for years been one of the best ways to appreciate the scope of the land. It rises from the grasslands, passes a long lake formed by melted glaciers, & climbs over the heights of the Livingston Range to another long glacial lake. Along the way, there are plenty of chances to stop, stretch your legs, & gawk over the tremendous scenery. Nature trails & interpretive pull-outs explain the ecology of the area & the procession of glaciers which carved the mountains. A half dozen campgrounds line the road, as well as boat docks, trailheads, & a visitor center at each end & at Logan Pass. The road took 11 years to build, & the section over Logan Pass was completed in 1932. The road is considered an engineering feat & is a National Historic Landmark. It is one of the most scenic roads in North America. Location: From the West Glacier entrance off US two northeast through the park to US 89, at the north end of St. Mary Lake. Season: May 16 - 3rd Sunday in October Fee: entrance fee for the park. Reservations: no.
