| Gallagher Canyon SRA offers access to the 400-acre Johnson Lake. Primitive camping is offered on the 24-acre area.
Gallagher Canyon offers good spring crappie fishing in the coves, as well as channel & flathead catfish. Drum & carp are common catches also. The area has a gravel boat ramp.
Attractions
Although a challenge to get to, Gallagher Canyon offers outstanding scenery & some of the state's best fishing for crappies & line-busting flathead & channel catfish, according to Brad Newcomb, a fisheries biologist for the Commission.
"It has a very good crappie system, especially in the spring, & a very good catfish population," Newcomb said.
Gallagher Canyon is part of the Central Irrigation District Supply Canal. The area provides H2O access to more than ten miles of the canal, & is open to all boats. The canal connects with Plum Creek Canyon Reservoir & Johnson Lake. Fishing is also available for walleye, sauger, white bass & freshwater drum.
Larry Roper, who manages the area, described the campground as heavily wooded. He said except for major holidays, the campground is never full.
"It's really kind of a neat area," Roper said. "It's too bad it's so far off the beaten path, but at the same time, that's what makes it so attractive to some people." |
