| New River State Park is located in Ashe & Alleghany counties, northwest of Greensboro, North Carolina. The Wagoner Road Access Area, at river mile 26, is also the location of the park office.

Traveling west on I-40 from eastern North Carolina, take US 421 north at Winston-Salem. Before Boone, turn north on US 221. After driving through Jefferson, turn right on NC 88 east. Cross the New River & turn left on Wagoner Access Road (SR 1590), which leads to the park office.
Traveling east on I-40 from western North Carolina, take the Blue Ridge Parkway north to US 221. Continue north on US 221. After driving through Jefferson, turn right on NC 88 east. Cross the New River & turn left on Wagoner Access Road (SR 1590), which leads to the park office.
From I-77, take US 421 north. Before Boone, turn north on US 221. After driving through Jefferson, turn right on NC 88 east. Cross the New River & turn left on Wagoner Access Road (SR 1590), which leads to the park office.
New River State Park offers three access areas that total more than 1,800 acres. Each area provides a canoe-in primitive campground with tables & grills. Wagoner Road Access Area offers nine primitive campsites & bathroom facilities with hot-water showers. At Wagoner Access, campers may park & carry their supplies 250 yards to the campsite, or campers may canoe downstream to a take-out ramp at the campground.
At the US 221 Access Area, campers must either walk or canoe to the 15 primitive campsites. Bathroom facilities with hot-water showers are nearby. Alleghany County Access, which has eight canoe campsites, is accessible only by canoe & has pit toilets & a pump for drinking water. Campers must sign in at registration boxes or with a park ranger. A modest fee is charged for camping.
