| Nestled in the scenic Turtle Mountains on the shores of Lake Metigoshe, Lake Metigoshe State Park was constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s & is one of the most popular year-round vacation spots in North Dakota.
The Chippewa called the lake "Metigoshe Washegum," or "clear H2O lake surrounded by oaks." Today, the lake is noted for its northern pike, walleye & perch. The rolling hills, aspen forests & small lakes attract nature & photography lovers to the area to capture these sights on film. The Old Oak Trail, a National Recreation Trail, is found within the park boundaries.
The park has both modern & primitive camping, as well as picnicking areas. There are group dormitories, kitchen & meeting facilities & year-round cabins available for rent.
Winter provides opportunities for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, skating, sledding & ice fishing. The snowmobile trails within the park connect with over 250 miles of groomed trails throughout the Turtle Mountains.
Ecology, conservation & outdoor recreation programs are offered at the park's Turtle Mountain Environmental Learning Center. |
