| Description: 7100-foot elevation. 37 campsites, including 21 tent-only sites on forested Anthony Lake, with spectacular views of Gunsight Peak. Fishing in the lakes for trout; wheelchair-accessible fishing pier.
Anthony Lakes is a great base camp for exploring the Blue Mountains & the North Fork John Day Wilderness. From the campground, hikers can follow the jeep trail to the Lakes Lookout trailhead. From the summit of Lees Peak, you can see the Anthony Lakes scattered across the flanks of the Blue Mountains; Grande Ronde, Patten, Black, Crawfish, Mud, & Hoffer Lakes. Other area hikes lead to Crawfish Lake, at the edge of the wilderness, & a longer hike from Elkhorn Crest, which climbs Gunsight Peak, then follows the ridge of the mountain range southwest into the wilderness. All the trails are open to horses; the Elkhorn Crest trailhead has a stock loading ramp. The Elkhorn Crest trail is also open to mountain bikers & ATV users.
In the winter, Anthony Lakes becomes a winter sports playground, with downhill skiing, Nordic skiing & snowmobiling all available in the area. The nearby Chicken Hill ATV area is also open to snowmobiling. Hunting for pheasant, bear, deer & elk.
