| Description: The Wild & Scenic Lostine River flows from the high peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness, following the U-shaped curve of a classic glacial cirque. The upper five miles, inside the wilderness boundary, are designated as wild, & the remaining 11 miles are designated for their recreational value. The river is surrounded by meadows & high mountain peaks.
Recreation in the river corridor includes hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, horseback riding, hiking, skiing, & camping. Facilities include developed campgrounds, picnic areas, & Forest Service rental cabins. If you prefer a more solitary experience, trailheads along the river corridor lead into the wilderness. Mule deer, elk, & black bear inhabit the canyon, along with Rocky Mountain sheep. The river also supports a good anadromous fishery. Fishing for trout, salmon, & steelhead; artificial flies & lures required.
Location: From the town of Lostine, take County Road 551 & Forest Road 8250 south, paralleling the river.
