| Description: This drive combines fascinating volcanic geology, trophy trout fishing, & spectacular mountain scenery in one 69-mile journey. The road climbs up into the area of the Cascade Mountains contained in the Deschutes National Forest, passing through a lake-filled area just south of the snow-capped mountains of the Three Sisters Wilderness.
If you want to spend a day along this route, you can fish in the crystalline mountain lakes; explore the Lava Cave & other formations created when the Cascades were active volcanoes; & hike into the wilderness or into the forest. Skiing at Mount Bachelor Ski Area; other winter sports are available in the forest.
Location: From Bend, go east on OR 372 (Century Drive-Cascade Lakes Highway) & south on Forest Road 46 to its intersection with OR 58. Recommended minimum drive time two hours.
Season: May - mid November; snow closures in winter.
Fee: some campgrounds charge a fee.
