| Description: Newberry National Volcanic Monument covers over 50,000 acres of a still-active volcano, from the high desert near bent to the 7985-foot peak of Mount Paulina, in the volcano`s caldera.
In the Newberry Crater, two lakes offer fantastic fishing for trophy rainbow & brown trout, as well as Atlantic & kokanee salmon. There are seven campgrounds in the caldera, with a range of amenities. Various trails are open to hikers, mountain bikers, & horse riders. In the winter, two sno-parks on County Road 21 open groomed trails to Nordic skiers. Roads are closed in winter to all motorized vehicles except snowmobiles. Thermal vents & hot springs border each of the lakes, indicating the ongoing geothermal activity which created this landscape.
