| Description: 5190-foot elevation. 147 campsites, including some double sites & four group areas, at the south end of Diamond Lake. Two group areas can accomodate up to 40 people, one can hold up to 56 people, & one can hold a whopping 104 happy campers. The campground is a playground for golden mantled ground squirrels, & boasts views of both Mount Bailey & Mount Thielsen. Fishermen enjoy angling for the abundantly stocked rainbow trout in the lake. Numerous area trails are open to hikers & mountain bikers, including a short nature trail, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, trails up Mount Bailey & Mount Thielsen (hikers only), & accessible paved trails around the lake. Interpretive programs are offered in the summer at the amphitheater at Diamond Lake Campground.
A huge day use area is available nearby, which offers group picnic tables, a lighted pavilion, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a swimming beach, & a playground.
In the winter, snowcat skiing is offered for small groups on Mount Bailey. Several trails are open to cross-country skiing, from the Howlock Mountain trailhead, the Mount Thielsen trailhead, & the South Diamond trailhead. The trails range from a short, 1-mile trail to a 15-mile expert loop trail. Wilderness trails include the Mt. Thielsen trail & the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Beware of avalanches on the back country routes. A sno-park permit is required.
Location: From Roseburg, go 80 miles east on OR 138, 0.5 mile south on Forest Road 4795 (Diamond Lake Loop), then 3.2 miles around the loop.
