| Description: 2000-foot elevation. two RV sites & a picnic area near the south end of Applegate Lake. Swimming & fishing in the lake. Trailhead for horse riders, mountain bikers, dirt bikers, & hikers. The trail climbs steadily through a mixed conifer forest at a moderate grade to Elliott Ridge. Views from the ridge display the dramatic differences between dark green forests of north slopes, while pale green & brown tones of predominantly brush & grass are seen on the south-facing slopes. The trail continues along the ridge to a crest just below Stein Butte. A short side trail to the top of Stein Butte offers excellent vistas of the Red Buttes & much of the Siskiyou Crest.The trail can be easily done as a loop.
Location: From Jacksonville, go about seven miles south on on OR 238, 20 miles south on Upper Applegate Road, then one mile east on County Road 777.
