| Description: 4800-foot elevation. 25 campsites on Gold Lake. Canoeing, kayaking, swimming & flyfishing in the lake. Nearby trails, which head out in all directions, are open to hikers & mountain bikers. One trail heads south to Upper & Lower Marilyn Lakes, another heads east to joing the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Another trail leads north of Gold Lake to the Gold Lake Bog, a marshy area which is excellent for wildlife watching, particularly for deer & elk. Yet another trail heads west into a lake-filled basin. A primitive log shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1940`s provides a dry picnic area. Spectacular wildflower displays; excellent huckleberry picking in season.
In the winter, this is part of the Willamette Pass Winter Recreation Area, & offers miles of cross-country ski trails for all levels of difficulty. The log shelter is used by cross-country skiers camping overnight. Additional shelters are at South Waldo, Bechtel Creek, Westview Loops, Fuji Creek & Maiden Peak. A state Sno-Park pass is required to park at these areas. Gold Lake is also the winter headquarters for the backcountry ski patrol.
Location: From Oakridge, go 28 miles east on OR 58 east, then two miles on Forest Road 500 (Gold Lake Road).
