The battle of Gettysburg touched GRANITE HILL on July 4, 1865. When General Lee retreated, he used the Hagerstouwn Road which is now Route 116 passing by GRANITE HILL. Some action took place in this very area. The entire community was held by the Confederate troops & the GRANITE HILL barn was used to shelter wounded soldiers. The original farm owner, Felix Drais was wounded in the wheat field during the second day's battle. Campers still find Civil War bullets here.
Granted from Penn's Charter, the Drais Farm became the property of the Cornett family in 1972 & is the only Gettysburg Civil War farm to become a RV Park. |
