Campground: Canyonlands National Park

Description: Elevation 5100 ft. The park enshrines some of the world`s most spectacular rock wonders. Three natural districts define the landscape. Island in the Sky, to the north, provides grand vistas which overlook deep twisting canyons. It is also the starting point for some of the world`s finest slickrock biking. The Maze is located in the southwestern section of the park & is, as the name suggests, a vast interwoven matrix of redrock & slickrock canyons. This is a remote area & plans to visit must be carefully planned & aranged with Ranger assistance. The Needles area, in the southern park district, is known for its unusual rock formations, carved by 300 million years of weathering. The Island is the Sky district has the most day hikes & is the easiest to visit. The confluence of two of the west`s great rivers, the Green & Colorado, provide a scenic waterway for rafters through this varied landscape. Many of the canyons are filled with Anasazi rock art. There are two frontcountry campgrounds, with limited sites available on a first come, first serve basis. Location: Canyonlands is divided into three land districts which are two to six hours apart by car. Needles District: From U.S. 191, take Utah 211 west to the Needles. Island in the Sky District: From U.S. 191, take Utah 313 south to the Island. Maze District: From Utah 24, take a graded dirt road east to the Hans Flat Ranger Station. Season: year round.
