| Description: A beautiful array of red rock canyons, historical features & slickrock wilderness were made possible by a geologic wrinkle created 100 million years ago when the Waterpocket Fold uplifted many layers of sedimentary rock which since has been eroded into cliffs, domes & grand spires. A unique feature is the Fruita Orchards, planted years ago as part of a Mormon settlement. The orchards still produce fruit & are maintained by the park. Visitors can pick fresh apples, pears, peaches, apricots & cherries. Climbing is increasing in popularity, & technical climbing may be enjoyed with a free backcountry permit. Visitors using pack animals are encouraged to begin their adventures at the Waterpocket Equestrian area. There are three campgrounds- two are free, but the Fruita campground is $10 /night.
