Campground: Fort Worden State Park

Description: 433 acres on the Puget Sound, where the fort which was the first line of defense against invasion by sea is now a conference center, campground, & day use park. The Coast Artillery museum offers a fascinating look at the history of these forts, which protected the Seattle area & the shipyards from the 1890s to the 1950s. Some of the beautiful Victorian buildings have been converted for use by the conference center, but the commmanding officers` quarters is open to the general public. Visitors enjoy 12 miles of hiking & biking trails, as well as five miles of trails accessible to all. A beach, boat ramps & a marina access the waters of Admirality Inlet for those who wish to swim, dive, waterski, or boat. Crabbing & fishing for red snapper, perch, salmon, bass, cod, & other saltwater species. Two campgrounds contain 80 RV sites, which can be reserved as group camping for conferences. An ampitheater is available for interpretive programs, & sports facilities include a basketball court, baseball & softball fields, horseshoe pits, & volleyball courts. Location: In Port Townsend, accessible from the Keystone Ferry or WA 19. Season: year round.
