| Description: 367 acres on Port Townsend Bay. Visitors can still see about a third of the original buildings, hewn from local timber in 1856. This fort was established to protect the settlers, & although it closed for a few years in the mid-19th century, it remained active until 1953, seeing service in WWII as a munitions-defusing station. A self-guided historical trail tours this area, & a self-guided nature trail explores some of the deep forest. Boating, fishing, crabbing, & clamming are the most popular activities here. Inland, several miles of trails are open to hiking, & some to biking.
The campground has 40 campsites, & a group area which can hold up to 80 people. Other facilities include a playground & ball fields. Junior ranger programs, nature walks, & other interpretive programs are held here in the summer.
