Campground: North Cascades National Park

Description: The park is divided by WA 20; the areas to the north & south are generally roadless & accessible only by foot or horseback. The area south of US 20 is designated as the Stephen Mather wilderness (634,614 acres), & a free backcountry permit is required to hike, climb, or pack into the wilderness. US 20 is enjoyed by many cyclists. There are horse trails & hiking trails which range from from short, wheelchair-accessible nature trails to long backcountry treks. Several campgrounds line the shores of the reservoir, including some which are accessible only by boat. Fishing is fairly good. Above the reservoir, visitors enjoy rafting on the wild & scenic Skagit River. In the winter, this river becomes a magnet for numerous bald eagles & bird watchers. Hunting is still permitted in this park. Location: From Burlington, go northwest on WA 20. Season: year round; access restricted in winter. Fee: NW Forest Pass; concession fees (camping, boats). Reservations: for bus trips, campgrounds, group camping.
