Campground: Skagit River

Description: A total of 157.5 miles of the Skagit River & its tributaries, the Cascade, Sauk, & Suiattle Rivers, are designated as wild for their scenic & recreational significance. The river is wide & gentle, with lushly forested slopes rising from the river valley up to the snowcapped peaks of the Northern Cascades. The lower river is famed for its concentration of wintering bald eagles. In a short stretch of river, over 500 bald eagles perch in trees on the shore & fish the winter salmon & steelhead runs. Winter visitors can watch the eagles from viewing stations near Marblemount or else float down the river. The Skagit has an outstanding salmon & steelhead fishery, supporting substantial runs of all five kinds of anadromous fish. Fishing regulations are fairly complex, so consult the Washington State sportfishing regulations (download 6.9 Mb pdf). Most of the river contains Class I & II rapids, with a few Class III rapids on the upper sections, including the Sauk River & a even few Class IV rapids on the Suiattle River & the North Fork Sauk River. A few developed campgrounds are along the river, including two state parks on the lower Skagit River, three on the Suiattle River & four on the Cascade River. Location: River access from WA 20, WA 530, from Cascade River Road, the Mountain Loop Highway south of Darrington, & Forest Road 26. Season: year round. Reservations: no.
