Campground: Wind River RV Park

You can never go home, but there's nothing that says you can't take it with you. RV's are an obsession for many Americans as a way to see their own country. The vehicles come in a variety of models, from custom vans to huge Class A land yachts. Banks, at least view them as second homes & offer long-term interest rates. But it's a far cry from camping when you have VCR's, air conditioning & real carpeting, diehard RVers will point out. One of the finest places to park a "rig" is the Wind River RV Park. Based on one rating scale, it ranked in the top 28 in the United States & in another, it was named the best in Wyoming. In 1999 it rated as one of the top 17 parks nationally. That's why Joe Pepper, Park Manager said, he has a return business rate of 22 percent. When you walk into the place, Pepper & his staff treat you as if they know you. One man from a small town near Laramie was shocked when he stepped in, not expecting the outpouring of friendship. The park started a few years ago by a couple from California & can take up to 60 RV's. Pepper said it has showers "nicer than many people have at home," cable TV, a commercial laundromat, the maximum amount of electricity for power hookups. Most customers are on their way to Yellowstone or the other national parks, but Pepper said if they get within 100 to 150 miles of this park, they will find their way there, allowing national RV magazines & the rating guides to work their magic. "The ones who come here want to be here." Pepper said. To boost the economy further, there is a gift shop at the park called Wind River Gifts & Crafts that feature an assortment of local goods. The one criterion is that they have to say something about Wyoming, whether they come from Riverton, Lander or the Honor Farm. Pepper had originally thought the gifts-jewelry, horseshoes, flutes & more- would mainly be bought by RV's but he's been getting a lot of business from locals who want to give a piece of Wyoming.
